Secretary Election 2020-2023

At the 2019 IMPS Members Meeting this coming July, we will be electing the Secretary of the Psychometric Society for the 2020-2023 term. The election occurs by paper ballot. All members are strongly encouraged to attend.

The Secretary is one of five officers of the society that comprise the Executive Committee (EC), and also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Election Committee, and the IMPS program committee. The Secretary’s primary function is to handle communication with the membership, organize elections, chair the annual members meeting at IMPS, be the point person for questions, and deal with other organizational issues that arise within the Society.

The two candidates for the election are Carolyn Anderson and Andries van der Ark. Their bios are provided below.

Carolyn Anderson

Carolyn Anderson is a professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in the Department of Educational Psychology with affiliations in the Departments of Psychology and Statistics. Her research lies at the intersection of multivariate models for categorical data and psychometrics. Dr. Anderson has been active in the Psychometric Society as both a student and faculty member. She won the dissertation award, has published a number of papers in Psychometrika, presented scholarly work and chaired sessions at IMPS, and judged student posters at IMPS. She has served the Society as a reviewer, book review editor, and associate editor for Psychometrika. She has been a member of the Board of Trustees and is currently a member of the editorial council of the Psychometric Society and the Secretary of the Society. Additionally, she has been on the board of directors of the Classification Society and has served on the executive committee, awards committee, and the membership committee of Division 5 of the American Psychological Society. “The Psychometric Society has been an important part of my career and supporting it has been my way to give back to the Society.”

Andries van der Ark

Andries van der Ark is a professor of Quantitative Research Methods at the Research Institute of Child Development and Education, as well as director of the Graduate School of Child Development and Education, at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He is a psychologist by training, and his research interests can be divided into four themes: (1) nonparametric item response theory, including Mokken scale analysis; (2) reliability and interrater reliability; (3) categorical marginal models; and (4) statistical solutions to practical data problems in the context of psychological testing, including handling missing data, handling outliers, and selecting items for scale development. In addition, he has made methodological and statistical contributions to substantive papers in areas ranging from virology to tourism research. As a member of the Psychometric Society since 1998, Dr. van der Ark has attended 19 meetings and served as a member of the Board of Trustees and as chair of the Publications Committee from 2014 to 2017. He also served as editor of the annual conference proceedings from 2012 to 2017. Currently, he serves on the society’s Finance Committee. “Given my strong affiliation with the Psychometric Society and my managerial and administrative experience as director of a large graduate school (140 faculty and staff, 700 students), I am well suited to serve as secretary. If elected, I will help maintain the current level of the society’s organization and the excellent level of the conferences. My goal is also to help increase membership by increasing the appeal of long-term membership, and convincing more psychometricians of the importance of a society that serves the interests of psychometricians worldwide and provides a network for international collaboration.”
